#LetLakeVictoriaBreatheAgain Campaign
About the Campaign
“Let Victoria Breath Again Campaign” is a project which was developed to facilitate awareness creation on the importance of the lake and promote its conservation. The campaign also facilitates climate change awareness creation, education on proper management of wastes, majorly plastic wastes, diapers and other wastes, environmental education and conservation, wildlife conservation and water conservation as well as promoting tree planting in schools and communities which are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
This project was developed by the Kisumu Environmental Champions who are also involved in the implementation through awareness campaigns including climate strikes which have been successfully carried out in Kisumu County in partnership with various youth-led environmental organizations who have actively come into play to champion behavioral change among the people living around the lake and general sensitization of communities living in Kisumu County.
Kisumu Environmental Champions as organization promotes eco-friendly products made from water hyacinth a native species of unwanted weed in the lake. We have used water hyacinth in making things such as, baskets, pen holders, table coasters, weaving furniture, matts, re-using of waste papers together with water hyacinth to make wedding and birthday cards and sling bags which are eco-friendly. This initiative as part of the project on ‘Let Lake Victoria Breath Again’, has promoted reduction in deforestation thus enhancing environmental conservation, management and enhancing climate change mitigation and adaptation in communities in Kisumu County.
