A movement born from crisis.
Kisumu Environmental Champions emerged during the COVID-19 period in 2020, at a time when young people and communities in Kisumu paused and began to critically observe the rapid environmental degradation of Lake Victoria.
The movement was inspired and shaped in part by the environmental activism and leadership of Rahmina Paullette, founder of the Let Lake Victoria Breathe Again campaign, whose advocacy used the lake as a symbol to draw attention to the wider impacts of climate change, pollution, and ecosystem destruction.
Building on this momentum, children, teens, and youths came together to form Kisumu Environmental Champions as a youth-led platform for environmental activism, community empowerment, and climate advocacy. What began with cleanups and tree planting quickly expanded into education, sensitization, and systemic advocacy addressing issues such as wetland degradation, pollution, and unsustainable practices within Kisumu and beyond.

Rahmina is a passionate environmental advocate dedicated to the protection and restoration of Lake Victoria. She believes that the health of the lake is intrinsically linked to the well-being of the communities that depend on it.

Our flagship advocacy and action campaign, launched in 2020 to draw attention to the growing environmental and climate threats facing Lake Victoria and water bodies worldwide.
The campaign uses Lake Victoria as a symbol to highlight the impacts of pollution, climate change, wetland degradation, riparian encroachment, and unsustainable human activities.
Through community-led cleanups, tree planting, public sensitization, and environmental advocacy, the campaign engages children, youths, and local communities in taking responsibility for the protection and restoration of the lake and its surrounding ecosystems.
